We threw ourselves
through the air
in a car
over badlands and plains
in Dakota.
It was the farthest you’d ever been
from the sea
or, at least, for so long
or, at least – at deepest least –
with me.
And, in dreams I had flying,
you still death-clutch me
and you’re wearing
wet clothes as you walk
to my car
from the edge of the dock
in the low, cold bay.
And you say you saw
something at the bottom –
breathing and lurching, flesh rotten,
reaching out for your shimmering skin –
and that you let it in.
You couldn’t stop shaking,
so we drained the whole basin.
We found nothing.
You said nothing.
You said, “Nothing?”
Well, some things go missing.
I’m wishing the same was true
of you,
but you didn’t stay gone.
And now you’re at the party,
and I was just starting
to breathe on my own,
but I have checked my lungs for breath;
there’s none left.
I’ve checked every
Stygian pocket for breath;
there is none.
Come give me some.
